APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR RUBIO MONOCOAT® OIL
PREPARATION OF THE SANDED FLOOR
Since Monocoat requires only a single coat you are not loosing time by following these instructions carefully. If you have any questions give us a call to Planet Hardwood, or Special Hardwood Products, Inc. @ 877 928 9663
Please read all the instructions before you call. This will allow us to serve you more efficiently.
PREPARING THE FLOOR
The floor should be professionally sanded ending with the use of a 80 or 100 grit screen. Avoid leaving screen marks, and carefully blend the edger areas with the field, which is especially important when you apply the rich Monocoat medium and dark colors. No differences in the shade of the colors should then appear.
Thoroughly remove all the dust from the floor before you start applying the oil. This new technology enables the oil to make a molecular connection within 15 seconds with the wood surface by means of a reaction. If there is dust, the oil will connect with the dust, which will become a microscopical paste upon the surface when the oil is spread. The Oil will be connected with the dust instead of the wood fibers.
Vacuum the floor very thoroughly with a strong vacuum cleaner with the proper suction attachment. Slightly dampen a terry cloth mop (we stock these) with the Monocoat Raw Wood Cleaner and tack (clean) the vacuumed floor.
The Monocoat Raw Wood Cleaner will let the dust be electrostatically absorbed by the dampened cloth. Check the cloth to see if you have achieved the desired result. If in doubt repeat the procedure.
COATING THE FLOOR
If only one person is engaged in the application of the Monocoat Oil, we recommend that an area of approximately 120 sq.ft. is selected to be processed at one time. Working time: about 15 to 25 minutes.
If two people are working on the job the area can be at least twice as large or even much larger. One man operates the buffer and the other one takes care of the perimeter work. A three man crew with one man taking care of the perimeter work, and two men working in tandem spaced 10 minutes apart, each of the two men with a buffer, there is no need to select a specific size area. Simply start and continue work to completion regardless of the size of the project.
The Monocoat oil needs to be stirred well (not just shaken) so that there are no color pigments left at the bottom of the can. Pour the well stirred oil into a handy squeeze bottle. The squeeze bottle will allow you to control the amount of oil you want on the floor. (Any squeeze bottle is OK – we stock these and will include one bottle and a funnel with each order). Do not flood the floor with the oil. Instead, use an absolute minimum of oil, just enough to get thorough coverage of the surface. Remember that the Monocoat Oil does not have to penetrate, nor does it have to leave a film. It converts the wood fibers.
1. Use a brush that gives you good control and apply a 4-inch wide strip of oil along the wall and other places where you cannot get close with a buffer. Pour the well stirred oil into a handy squeeze bottle. This will allow you to control the amount of oil you want on the floor. We stock these and will include one with each order Do not flood the floor with the oil, but apply enough to get thorough coverage of the surface resulting in a wet look. Remember that the Monocoat Oil does not have to penetrate nor does it have to leave a film. It converts the wood fibers.
2. Use a 175 rpm buffer with a red or white pad. Initially, squeeze sufficient oil on the pad to get an easy start. Then spread the oil parallel with the planks using a minimum amount of oil. Buff the floor once more without adding any oil in order to even out the application. Some woods like Douglas Fir will naturally absorb more oil. Check for dry spots or an uneven appearance. Only if necessary, squeeze small amounts of oil onto the dry spots and spread with buffer until consistant coverage and an even appearance.
Please Note: It is very important to let the product react now for 10 minutes before taking step #3(before removing the excess oil). Do not wait longer than 10 minutes or the excess oil will become sticky and difficult to remove. NEVER LEAVE A FILM. If this occurs, you can sprinkle a small amount of oil over the sticky area to revive, thin it, and remove it.
REMOVING EXCESS OIL
3. Using a cotton cloth, remove excess oil from the hand brushed areas. Remove excess oil from the field with a 175rpm buffer using one or more white pads, ending with the use of a cotton cloth under a white pad.
Remove all excess oil or the drying time (24 to 36 hours) will be extended and dusty foot prints will show. After the drying time of 36 hours, areas with heavy traffic should be protected for +/- one week with a porous material (cardboard). Once the 36 hour cure period has passed, the oil will be resistant to water and most liquids. Should the finish show signs of spotting during the cure period dampen the cloth with Rubio Monocoat oil and rub the spot. This will remove the spot and rejuvenate the finish.
There is no need to apply a second layer on top of the Monocoat Oil because this extra layer will not bond with the primarily bonded Monocoat layer.
CARING FOR YOUR FLOOR
During the first week it is advisable to only clean with a vacuum cleaner or a dust mop fitted with a dry cloth. DO NOT use a damp cloth.
During the second week, a damp mop soaked in clean water and wrung out thoroughly can be used with due care.
After three weeks, the floor can be maintained with maintenance products from Rubio Monocoat.
To maintain a matte appearance:
Use Monocoat Natural Cleaner, diluted, for periodic cleaning after a waiting period of three weeks.
To create a satin appearance:
Use Monocoat Satin Soap, undiluted, as soon as the floor is completely dry.
Drying time of the floor is approximately 36 hours. Drying time of Satin Cleaner is approximately 30 minutes.
To maintain the satin appearance:
Use Monocoat Satin Soap, diluted, for periodic cleaning.
Warning:
Oil saturated cloths, pads, and saw dust can spontaneously combust and must therefore be burnt, placed in water, or kept in a lid-sealed metal container.
Tools can be cleaned with Monocoat Raw Wood Cleaner
